Bitter? I’m Not Bitter

By Jackson Toby

In his review in the Wall Street Journal of my book The Lowering of Higher Education in America, Ben Wildavsky writes:

Perhaps this kind of experience [with illiterate college students] accounts for Mr. Toby’s seeming bitterness toward unserious students, whom he calls ‘unprepared, half-asleep catatonics who drift in late and leave early.’

I don’t think the overall tone of the book is bitter toward college students, even unserious ones. If you read the book, you can judge for yourself.
