Another UN profile in courage. Reuters reports:
The United Nations joined Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Thursday in calling on the U.S. military to take disciplinary action against those who burned copies of the Koran at a NATO air base, calling the incident a “grave mistake”….
“After the first step of a profound apology, there must be a second step … of disciplinary action,” Jan Kubis, special representative for the U.N. secretary-general in Afghanistan, told a news conference.
“Only after this, after such a disciplinary action, can the international forces say ‘yes, we’re sincere in our apology’,” added Kubis, without elaborating on what action should be taken….
Distancing the United Nations from the anti-Western uproar, Kubis lamented the attack on a U.N. compound in Kunduz province in the north last week, which angry demonstrators charged with weapons. U.N. staff was relocated around the country.
“We were not the ones who desecrated the holy Koran,” Kubis said. “We deeply, deeply, profoundly respect Islam.”
In some of the toughest language yet from an international organisation over the Koran burnings, Kubis added:
“We were very hurt that the international military allowed the desecration of the Koran. We rejected and condemned this act, it doesn’t matter that it was a mistake.”
A few thoughts:
1.) Kubis’s message translated: “Please don’t kill us. We’re with you guys. We hate those evil Americans too.” What a pathetic little coward.
2.) The same UN that can’t bring itself to condemn Bashar al-Assad while he massacres thousands of innocent people in Syria is perfectly willing to “reject and condemn” what it readily admits was the mistaken burning of Korans?
3.) Where in Kubis’s statement was his call for the punishment of the Afghans who have just killed more U.S. soldiers in retaliation for the incident? Does he “reject and condemn” those acts of murder as well? Apparently not.
4.) Where is Kubis’s outrage at the terrorist detainees who “desecrated” the Korans in question by writing in them and using them as vehicles to pass jihadist messages? Isn’t writing in the Koran a desecration as well?
5.) Who exactly provides for Kubis’s security? Not the “UN Army,” that’s for sure. Since he’s so willing to throw the United States under the bus, perhaps it’s time to tell him he’s being cut off and needs to either leave Afghanistan or arrange for his own protective services. Hopefully the “blue helmets” will do a better job of protecting him than they did the people of Srebrenica.
6.) Kubis is Secretary General Ban Ki Moon’s personal representative. Someone in the U.S. government needs to pick up the phone and give Moon a call and tell him it’s time to find Kubis another posting. His time in Afghanistan should be up.

I would add a few other things to your list. How is it that the Middle East, birthplace to a large number of religions is almost wholly Islamic? Where is the U.N. outrage about credible death sentences for apostasy in Pakistan and Iran? Islam needs a reformation to be acceptable to Western Civilization. Certainly Christianity has had episodes in its history when those who were driving events were barbarians, but I think most of us understand that there is nothing in the New Testament that recommends or excuses that behavior. I’m not certain how you can get to civilization following the teachings of a bandit with a six year old among his several wives.
